Mitch Cullin was at his desk in the IT department when a less senior IT staffer asked, "Hey, who are you typing to?"
"I was using Net Send to ask one of my direct reports to call me at my extension."
Intrigued, the anonymous IT staffer said, "Cool. Can you show me how to use it? I've never seen that before."
Mitch explained, "Ok, well, here's what the results of a slash question mark would be." Mitch typed:
NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message.
After Mitch demonstrated a few more times, the anonymous IT staffer went back to his desk and tried it himself.
Pulling his chair in closer to the keyboard, he typed his syntax up on the screen and hit Enter....
Suddenly, all over the world, employees received a message on their monitors:
"MOVE IT OR LOSE IT, TOEJAM!"
The anonymous IT staffer meant to send the joking message to Mitch, but, unfortunately, he made an error in his syntax and sent it to the entire global NT 4.0 domain!
Mitch predictably started hearing telephone lines ringing just minutes later. Calls came in from all over the place, mostly from irate or confused VPs or their secretaries.
"Needless to say, we totally razzed the guy every time we talked to him for a while, but fortunately, nothing serious came of the event."
