When sharing folders using Windows NT two methods can be used to secure the shared folders
Shared permissions can be defined on both NTFS and FAT file systems but can be defined only for the entire folder, and not for individual files.
NTFS permissions, as we know, can be defined on the file level, which means that you can define different permissions for every file in a given folder. This is obviously a better situation when there are files of different importance or confidentiality in a particular folder, or when there are personnel at different levels accessing a particular folder.
If you want to combine both NTFS and Shared permissions you can leave shared permissions on the default setting (Full Control for the Everyone group) and then set specific NTFS permissions for each file or folder, thereby enjoying the best of both worlds.
