Rescue and repair it with the Recovery Console

Older software and a newer operating system can combine to create some sticky problems during and after installation. Windows 98 software, for example, will rewrite the boot record for the system partition on a system running Windows 2000. Next time the system is powered up, there won't be an option to boot in Windows 2000. The solution is a tool called Recovery Console. There are two ways to start the Recovery Console:

• If you are unable to start your computer, you can run the Recovery Console from your Windows 2000 Setup disks or from the Windows 2000 Professional CD (if you can start your computer from your CD drive).
• You can install the Recovery Console on your computer to make it available in case you are unable to restart Windows 2000. You can then select the Recovery Console option from the list of available operating systems.

The program, works with Windows 2000 Server or Professional, and acts like a smaller version of a MS-DOS console, offering a set of commands that will help fix most common problems, including repairing the boot record.
